Duty Free Shopping - UK
Duty Free Shopping
Duty Free is the term commonly used for products that are exempt from excise duty (& tax); these are available exclusively to international passengers who are travelling outside of the European Union (EU).
These items are identified in-store with tickets which show a green box containing the wording ‘Only available to passengers travelling OUTSIDE the European Union’.
Duty Free items include cigarettes, machine-made cigars, rolling tobacco and a range of selected spirits, typically showing savings of up to 50% off these products.
Travelling Within the European Union
The good news for those travelling within the EU & UK is that there are still many great products available to purchase including an extensive range of spirits, wine, champagne, fragrance, skincare and confectionery – in fact everything in-store is available to purchase with the exception of cigarettes, tobacco and select range of spirits designated as ‘duty free’ for those passengers travelling outside the EU.
Additionally, unlike duty free purchases, there are also no allowance restrictions on the amount that can be purchased for personal use.
Countries Which Are Part of the European Union
The EU includes the following 27 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including the Balearic Islands - Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca), Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK.
Please note: There are a number of other islands or territories which, despite being within the “footprint” of the EU, or being sovereign states of those 27 members of the EU, are not within the tax territory of the EU. This means that whenever you are travelling to these countries/areas listed below, you can buy relevant goods at “Duty Free” prices. These destinations are The Canary Islands - Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura (these are part of Spain), the Channel Islands - Jersey & Guernsey and Gibraltar (these are part of the UK).
